We base our foaling times on 340 days, which is pretty much in the middle. In order for the foals' lungs to be well developed, the mare must carry at least 320 days. There are many theories as to what makes a mare carry longer or shorter...some say colts take longer, older mares take longer, maiden mares take longer. The best way to figure is a starting point (like 340 days) and keep track of the mares pregancies and births to develop a pattern. Even then, you never know! Weather can even affect if they will foal or not. We use this calculator to help us along: duncity.net/horses/foalingcalc.htm
